Is training a requirement to become an Independent Marriage Celebrant?

There is no direct legal requirement in New Zealand to undertake any official training. However, the Registrar-General must be satisfied that the applicant will conscientiously perform the duties of a marriage celebrant under the Marriage Act 1955 and the Births, Deaths and Marriages, and Relationships Registration Act 1995. This course may compliment your other submissions to the Registrar-General. There are other requirements and all applicants need to familiarise themselves with the application process prior to enrolment. See The Department for Internal Affairs Website for more information on the process
